ANI begins a new concession to modernize the Rafael Núñez airport in Cartagena

  • The National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) and the concessionaire Operadora Internacional Aeropuerto de Cartagena SAS (OINAC) signed the contract initiation document that will allow the expansion, remodeling, operation and maintenance of this air terminal over the next 8,5 years, with an investment of more than $920.000 million.

The signing of the reversion agreement with the previous concessionaire and the initiation document of the new concession by the National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) formalizes a new stage in the history of the Rafael Núñez international airport in Cartagena, which will allow capacity to be increased. operational and offer a better service experience with the highest quality standards.

“We received the infrastructure of the Rafael Núñez airport from the previous concessionaire and began the new concession contract with which we will contribute to improving the standards of operation, quality and service in this strategic air terminal for tourism, competitiveness and the economic growth of the region and the country”, indicated Francisco Ospina Ramírez, president of the ANI.

The concession contract for the Rafael Núñez international airport in Cartagena, awarded in November 2023 to the concessionaire Operadora Internacional Aeropuerto de Cartagena SAS (OINAC), will allow for a new international terminal of 17.360 m2 and the remodeling of 2.814 m2 of the existing terminal.

During the formal ceremony, the concessionaire OINAC expressed its commitment to consolidating the airport as a key link for the growth of the city and the region. “We recognize the importance of our management as an entry point to this wonderful city and we are determined to continue promoting tourism, facilitating connections that drive economic growth and the international projection of Cartagena, as well as maintaining and improving service levels.“said Carlos Cuartas, manager of the concession.

In turn, the manager highlighted the importance and commitment of the airport workers, and their role in this transition process to the new concessionaire. “Human talent, which is the true driving force of companies, has been invited to continue with OINAC in its entirety: talented people who want to continue contributing to build on what has been built”, Dijo.

There will be 8,5 years of concession: 1 year of pre-construction, 2,5 years of construction and 5 years of operation and maintenance. The works also include the expansion of the commercial platform by 15.740 m2, for a total of 99.770 m2; the development of 11.683 m2 of the parking area, increasing the capacity to 330 vehicles, and the construction of a road parallel to the runway to optimize the operation of the airport.

With the new concessionaire, the airport will have 22 interventions, plus maintenance works on the control tower and Aerocivil officesIn addition, local repairs of floors, walls, ceilings, doors and lighting, among others. It is expected that they will be generated more than 13.741 direct and indirect jobs, boosting the local workforce.

For its part, Sociedad Aeroportuaria de la Costa SA (Sacsa), a concessionaire that has been in charge of the airport operation since 1996, delivered the areas, goods, works and improvements carried out.

María Claudia Gedeón, representative of the concessionaire, referred to the years of work and commitment that contributed to positioning the Rafael Núñez airport. “This is a legacy that will endure in the history of Cartagena, where we marked a milestone in the development of our city and its air connectivity. Despite closing this chapter, our commitment to the growth of Cartagena, the promotion of tourism and the well-being of our community remains unwavering," concluded.
